47歲的格利森立志成為一位成功作家，更希望憑?自己的作品，獲得殊榮，上台領獎。他本周「如願以償」，在美國 聖何塞大學主辦的一年一度寫作比賽中，擊敗了另外數以千計的對手，奪得 「最劣寫作獎」。　住在威斯康辛州麥迪遜市的格利森，創作了一部虛構的小說參賽，不管是從英文寫作技巧，遣詞造句、語法，還是以故事內容和情節來衡量，都令評判搖頭嘆息。　這部小說一開頭是這樣寫的：「杰拉爾德開始了──但被一下刺耳的哨子聲打斷，他的聽覺永遠受損十分之一，正如爆發地點半徑10哩範圍內其他人一樣，但這樣又無關重要，因為對他們來說，「永久」是指之後的10分鐘，他們會被熔岩淹沒或被灰燼熗至窒息──杰拉爾德開始撒尿了。
